{"id":4956,"date":"2021-04-21T10:33:02","date_gmt":"2021-04-21T06:33:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qia.az\/en\/?p=4956"},"modified":"2021-04-21T10:33:03","modified_gmt":"2021-04-21T06:33:03","slug":"biden-administration-backs-making-washington-d-c-the-51st-state","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qia.az\/en\/biden-administration-backs-making-washington-d-c-the-51st-state\/","title":{"rendered":"Biden administration backs making Washington D.C the 51st state"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>On Tuesday, the Biden administration formally threw its support behind a long-shot bid from Democrats to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/Qia.az\" class=\"rank-math-link\">Q\u0130A.az<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0says, referring to the Washington Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Congress should \u201cprovide for a swift and orderly transition to statehood\u201d for the more than 700,000 Washington residents who do not have full voting representation in the House and Senate, the Office of Management and Budget said in a statement of administration policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The White House\u2019s full-throated support for D.C. statehood came days before the House is set to vote on a bill that would put the commonwealth on \u201cequal footing with the other states.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The legislation, H.R. 51, is expected to pass in the House but is likely to hit roadblocks in the Senate, where 60 votes are required to overcome the filibuster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe residents of our nation\u2019s capital deserve voting representation in Congress and full local self-government,\u201d said Eleanor Holmes Norton, Washington\u2019s Democratic delegate in the House and the bill\u2019s sponsor, in a statement applauding the OMB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWith Thursday\u2019s House vote and expected passage, along with Democratic control of the Senate and White House, we have never been closer to statehood,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, the Biden administration formally threw its support behind a long-shot bid from Democrats to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state,\u00a0Q\u0130A.az\u00a0says, referring to the Washington Times.
