{"id":8892,"date":"2021-08-08T09:56:12","date_gmt":"2021-08-08T05:56:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/qia.az\/en\/cuba-legalizes-small-and-medium-sized-private-businesses\/"},"modified":"2021-08-08T09:56:12","modified_gmt":"2021-08-08T05:56:12","slug":"cuba-legalizes-small-and-medium-sized-private-businesses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/qia.az\/en\/cuba-legalizes-small-and-medium-sized-private-businesses\/","title":{"rendered":"Cuba legalizes small and medium-sized private businesses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> [ad_1]<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/qia.az\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2021\/08\/Cuba-legalizes-small-and-medium-sized-private-businesses.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<div itemprop=\"articleBody\">\n<p>Cuba&#8217;s communist government has legalized small and medium-sized private businesses in the wake of mass anti-government protests last month, <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/report.az\/en\">Report<\/a><\/noindex> informs, citing <noindex><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/world-latin-america-58132000\">BBC<\/a><\/noindex>.<\/p>\n<p>Under the new rules, enterprises with up to 100 employees will be allowed.<\/p>\n<p>President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel said Cuba was taking firm steps to update its economic model.<\/p>\n<p>Critics say the government&#8217;s plans have been accelerated because of July&#8217;s protests, when thousands turned out to complain of economic ruin.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators condemned the handling of the coronavirus pandemic and demanded political change.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens were arrested nationwide, and that least one man died in the unrest.<\/p>\n<p>The protests came amid a severe economic crisis.<\/p>\n<p>In July, the authorities said they would allow travelers arriving in the country to bring in food, medicine and other essentials without paying import duties.<\/p>\n<p>Scrapping the import duties had been suggested by some Cubans as a way to ease the shortages of medicines and food.<\/p>\n<p>Tourism, one of the most important sectors, has been devastated by global restrictions on travel during the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>Sugar, which is mostly exported, is another key earner for Cuba.
