The Telegram messenger faces fines of up to 55 million euros in Germany due to the lack of a contact person to communicate with government services and insufficient measures to combat content that violates the law, Report informs via Spiegel.

According to the news magazine, the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection demands that Telegram “obey the law,” the platform must “must be accessible to the authorities, immediately remove criminal content and actively transfer user data to investigators.”

The Federal Office of Justice, under the German Justice Ministry, has also launched two court proceedings for imposing a fine on Telegram since the company has not appointed a contact person to communicate with the authorities and does not offer a legal procedure for filing complaints about illegal content in Germany.

The size of the fines can be up to 55 million euros, Spiegel writes.
