UN: Nearly half of North Koreans starving

The UN’s State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World report reveals an increasing famine in North Korea, with 42.4% of the country’s population malnourished, Report informs.

The study covers the period from 2018 to 2020.

Compared with previous observations carried out between 2004 and 2006, the situation has worsened. Back then, 33.8% of North Korean citizens were starving.

It is the worst figure in East Asia. The proportion of the starving population in North Korea is almost six times higher than the regional average of 6.2%. Thus, in Mongolia, the number of undernourished people is 4.3% of the population. In other countries, this figure is even lower.

The report also says that at the end of 2020, about 300,000 children under five years of age suffered from constant hunger in North Korea. All of them suffer from developmental delays.

The worst food supply is in Somalia, where 59.5% of the population is starving.
