President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Japarov has today signed a new version of the country’s Constitution.
“QİA.az” informs, citing TASS, that the signing ceremony took place at the Ala-Archa state residence and was broadcast live.
Amendments to the Constitution provide for a significant expansion of the president’s authorities, a reduction in the powers of parliament, and a reduction in the number of members of parliament from 120 to 90.
The head of state will now have full control over the government, including the powers to appoint and dismiss ministers.
In addition, the president will no longer be elected once for a six-year term but twice for a five-year period. Thus, the Kyrgyz Republic is moving from a presidential-parliamentary form of government to a presidential model.
